Crowns are a fixed restoration fitted to the remaining part of a prepared tooth or, placed on a Dental Implant They are an ideal way to rebuild a damaged tooth.
Crowns can also be used to reshape and help realign uneven and slightly crooked teeth and can dramatically improve the appearance of a tooth that has been badly discoloured by fillings adding to a healthy and vibrant smile.
Root Canaled Tooth + Crown - Drilling into a tooth weakens the tooth’s structural integrity. Following a root canal treatment, placement of a Crown will often be advised for strength and because Crowns are also best for sealing the root canaled tooth to protect against any further infection.
Root Canal treated teeth may also require the added support of a “post” to give strength and improve the bonding of the Crown to the root. Made of stainless steel, posts are fitted directly into the root canal and can be either pre-fabricated or custom made by our Dental Technicians to accurately fit the shape of the prepared root canal. Once the post is in place, the Crown is attached on top.
Full Porcelain (Zirconium) Crowns are becoming increasingly popular.
Procera™ Full Porcelain Crowns are particularly recommended for front teeth replacement and Cosmetic Dentistry as they are metal free and have the same translucence as normal teeth giving a completely natural look to the replacement tooth/teeth.
Full Porcelain Crowns also ensure there will be no problem with the appearance of a fine dark line of metal at the base of the crown that can sometimes happen if gum recession occurs and the patient has Porcelain on Metal Crowns.
With the strength of modern materials now used in their construction, they can also be placed anywhere in the mouth.
Construction
Using the impression taken by the dentist, a base is carved out of a full porcelain block then veneered with layers of porcelain to give the final shape and colour of the tooth then fired in a kiln fusing the porcelain to the porcelain base.
Porcelain fused to metal Crowns remain one of dentistry’s primary restorations - they are strong and reliable. Often used in the molar regions as they can withstand considerable biting force; these are still the most popular crowns.
Depending upon the number of Crowns that may be needed, 5 working days are usually required.
Construction
Using the impression taken by the dentist, a metal thimble base is cast in noble alloy then veneered with layers of porcelain and fired in a kiln fusing the porcelain to the metal thimble.
Porcelain fused to gold Crowns are the strongest and longest lasting Crowns because of the inherent strength advantage of a gold base. These Crowns are particularly used for back teeth restoration.
Construction
The construction technique is similar to the Porcelain fused to metal Crowns.
