Brushing Your Teeth

Kreativ Dental Clinic a well respected dentist in Budapest advises patients to visit their dentist at least once a year for a check-up and dental hygienist treatment.

Plaque is a colourless, sticky film of bacteria that constantly grows on and in between teeth and along the gum line.

Plaque that is not removed will accumulate along with mucus and food particles and harden to form 'tartar' that ordinary brushing won't remove. Only professional cleaning by a dentist can properly and safely remove tartar.

The longer plaque and tartar are left on teeth the more harmful they become causing periodontal diseases ranging from simple gum inflammation (Gingivitis) to serious disease (Periodontitis) that results in irreversible damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth; it is the major cause of tooth loss in adults.

The first line of defence against periodontal disease is prevention. This necessitates a good daily oral hygiene routine at home. Brushing correctly at least twice a day and cleaning between teeth once a day with floss helps to prevent plaque and bacteria from accumulating.

When Should I Brush My Teeth

Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste in the morning before breakfast and, last thing at night before you go to bed. Avoid brushing your teeth straight after a meal as it can damage your teeth. Fruit, fizzy drinks, wine and many other foods contain acid. This acid softens tooth enamel that can then be worn away by brushing. Instead, wait an hour after a meal before brushing your teeth to give your saliva time to neutralise the acid. Finishing your meal with a glass of water also helps.

Brushing Your Teeth Correctly – Manual Toothbrushes

Proper brushing takes at least two minutes. Tilt the brush at a 45 degree angle against the gum line and roll the bristles away from the gum line towards the ends of the teeth. This action can help reduce the risk of gum recession.

Use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to hard-to-reach back teeth, and areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration and the gum line.

Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each quadrant section as follows……first brush the outer surfaces of your upper and then your lower teeth. Next, brush the inner surfaces of your upper and then your lower teeth followed by the chewing surfaces.

The rough surface of your tongue also retains a lot of bacteria so be sure to brush your tongue too for fresher breath.

Brushing Your Teeth Correctly – Electric Toothbrushes

More expensive and, not always convenient when travelling, electric toothbrushes have generally proven to be more effective in removing plaque than manual toothbrushes.

For those with limited dexterity or who have difficulty brushing, an electric toothbrush is a particularly good choice.

The brushing action of electric toothbrushes is very different from manual toothbrushes however, it is easy to learn and you will quickly adapt. Always refer to the brushing instructions supplied with your electric toothbrush.

Instructions for using 'Rotation Oscillation Action' electric toothbrushes (eg, Oral-B) are….guide the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth. Follow the curve of the gum and the shape of each tooth moving the brush head from the outer surface to the chewing surface and then to the inner surface of each tooth. Hold the brush head in place for a few seconds then, move on to the next tooth. Don't forget to reach all areas including behind your back teeth then move the brush head along the gum line.

Whatever method you use to clean your teeth, the dentists in Budapest at Kreativ also recommend the daily use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash.

Changing Your Toothbrush

Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled toothbrush is best and they should be replaced when the bristles appear worn and splayed or, every 3 months - whichever comes first.

Remember, new toothbrushes – manual or electric - remove more plaque than ones that are worn.

Changing your toothbrush after a cold is a good idea too as the bristle heads retain germs that can lead to re-infection.
